Fact verses Fiction Among Breeders

Posted by Theresa Goiffon on Wednesday, March 28, 2012, In : Helpful Tips

Fact:  Not all breeders are alike.

Fiction: Getting a puppy from a breeder that owns and breeds show dogs will be more expensive. I only want a pet/family companion.

Reputable breeders are there for you for the life of your dog. At least in the Australian Terrier breed, which is not very common breed, most generally have a waiting list for upcoming litters.

We support health testing the Dam and Sire prior to breeding. Also some breeders, like us, temperament test their puppies to confi...

Australian Terrier Grooming Revisited

By: Theresa Goiffon

I would like to preface this with, I am by no means an expert groomer. I have learned to groom my Australian Terrier on my own. However, over the past couple years, I have also had the privilege to have a few experienced Australian Terrier Breeders and Handlers show me a few tips as well.

This blog was created because of the many inquires I receive regarding grooming and to update my previous blog Grooming your Australian Terrier ...

Once again the Popular Sire Syndrome, is addressed, which is quoted to be "the greatest threat to overall breed health and vitality". Some breeders are ignorant to this serious problem.  Here are some bullets that address these questions and a link to the complete newsletter from the AKC Canine Health Foundation.

Oh...Aussie's it's cold outside!

Posted by Theresa Goiffon on Friday, January 21, 2011, In : Breed Information

Beckham and Gabby love the snow!

Life in rural Wisconsin in the winter can be so enjoyable.  First there is the beautiful snow, which provides plenty of outside activities such as; cross-country skiing, ice-fishing, sledding and skating just to name a few.

Along with these enjoyable winter activities, there is the bitter cold, which generally starts in January and continues until late February.

So the question is, how do dogs like this weather, more specifically how do Australian Te...

New blog with updated tips for grooming your Aussie can also be found here:
http://dunhamlakeaustralianterriers.com/aussie-talk/grooming-your-australian-terrier

It's not easy if you are a new Aussie owner trying to find a groomer that knows how to properly groom an Australian Terrier. I learned to groom by asking other aussie people, looking at many photos of properly groomed aussies and just practice.

When we were new to the breed, there wasn't anyone near us to help us with hands-on trainin...

Temperment Testing Your Puppy!

Posted by Theresa Goiffon on Wednesday, August 25, 2010, In : Helpful Tips

We are a very hands-on breeder and will always be.  For me, it's the only way to really know each and every one of our puppies.  This is important when making the decision on which puppy would be the best match for their forever family.

From the moment they are born, I take great effort in studying, observing, holding and just playing with our puppies to make sure I know them. It's not just about "how they look" which is important, especially when considering a show/breeding puppy, but wha...

Construct your own Whelping Box

Posted by Theresa Goiffon on Tuesday, August 24, 2010, In : Helpful Tips

When we decided to breed our first Australian Terrier we had many things to consider, not only the breeding pair, but where will they be whelped which led to looking for a whelping box.

We were fortunate that when we built our home a few years ago, we planned on breeding, so we have a really wonderful set up in the lower level of our home, which includes infloor heating, windows, a door to the exterior back yard, even a sink.

My husband, the handyman, decided to take on the responsiblity ...

Grand Champion Benayr "Beckham" Just for Kicks

We are honored and thrilled to announce that our dog Champion Benayr Beckham Just for Kicks is the 4th Australian Terrier in the US to achieve his Grand Championship Title.

Beckham lives with us and is co-owned with our friend, Pamela Levy from Arista Aussies. Beckham has been shown by my 11 year old daughter Ellie.

Several people have asked us about this accomplishment and how does a dog acheive this title.  Here are the details and requirements...

Ring My Bell!

Posted by Theresa Goiffon on Friday, March 5, 2010, In : Helpful Tips

(Teddy, owned by Jan and Duane, Bred by Dunham Lake Aussies, pictured above at almost 1 year, was potty trained easily)

It would be nice to keep the guessing out of knowing when your 4-legged friend needs to go outside. Some dogs, like our Aussies, come up to us and stare at us, one has a certain bark he makes, yet another will sometimes jump up at us and when she does, you know it's time to run to the door.

Every pet owner eventually figures it out and looks for the signs from their dog, but ...

What do you feed your Australian Terriers?

Posted by Theresa Goiffon on Saturday, February 27, 2010, In : Dog Health and Current News related topics

Recently, I was approached by a supplier of an all natural dog food line wondering if I would consider selling their products on our website. The sales woman was quite pleasant and educated in pet food in general and of course her product line, which was produced by a Veternarian so I agreed to sample it.

The product was all natural didn't contain corn, high in protein and it was clearly fresh.  Our dogs really liked it.

This product isn't available in stores and shipping fees I felt were ...

Posted by Theresa Goiffon on Saturday, November 14, 2009, In : Helpful Tips

If you are thinking about bringing an Australian Terrier into your family, here are some things for you to consider:

Take the time and do some research, ask questions of breeders or people that have an Aussie. Attend a dog show in your area sometimes they are represented there. Read up on the typical personality of an Aussie and really check out the Aussie breeder.  Like most people, we have similarities and differences. Find a breeder that meets your needs with a program that benefits the ...

Australian Terrier Breeder

Theresa Greetings from Northwestern Wisconsin! I am a wife, mother, breeder and author. I home school 2 of our girls and our 3rd is now on her own. I work part time at our church. I also have a small Website business providing website design to small businesses and friends. Previously, I had a 25 year banking career. Retired several years ago, as a Vice President of Commercial Banking and Business Development Director for a financial institution. I have owned and raised dogs and cats for over 40 years. In 2007, we started to show and raise Australian Terriers. We have 6 Australian Terriers and 2 Australian Shepherds. We own and have bred some of the top Australian Terriers in the USA. We have been honored at the 2011 AKC Eukanuba National's with the highest award for a breeder, Best Bred-by Australian Terrier and the 1st Award of Excellence. This win was awarded to our Ch. Dunham Lake Gabriella Touched by an Angel "Gabby" handled by her 12 year old breeder/owner/handler, my daughter, Ellie. We have Championed several Aussies and we have Champions in training, that being said, our dogs are first and foremost our companions. Our two younger daughters, are actively involved in Junior Showmanship, it has been a great activity for them and our family as well. I take my role as a breeder very seriously. I support health testing and temperament testing as well as evaluating proper conformation prior to breeding. We believe in breeding for quality not quantity. We do not ship our puppies. Regardless of whether your puppy comes from us or not I hope you find our site a helpful resource. If you have questions about our program or about the Aussie Terrier, please e-mail me theresaagoiffon@msn.com or give me a call@ 715-689-2675. Thanks for visiting us! Blessings, Theresa
